  16.                            Instructions for upgrade:
  17.  
  18.             Unzip the .ZIP file into the Hard Drive directory containing
  19. the "Magic Candle II" game. Use the overwrite option (-o) to replace the
  20. existing files. This version only works on VGA machines, do not copy these
  21. files if you EGA or Tandy 16-color graphics.
  22.  
  23.                   SOME  PROBLEMS FIXED IN THIS  2.00 VERSION: 
  24.  
  25.             Problems discovered using magical scrolls have been fixed. 
  26. Rare occurances of party members disappearing on assignments and incorrect 
  27. coordinates when using mindstones are also fixed.             
  28.  
  29.             A stand-alone program to restore characters already lost 
  30. on assignment is included. In addition, a few customers have reported 
  31. instances of characters which, according to a mindstone, have arrived 
  32. at correct stronghold locations but do not appear when the stronghold 
  33. is visited. A list of commands are given to edit the save game and 
  34. allow these characters to appear.            
  35.  
  36.             We thank the players that called and made us aware of 
  37. all these previously unknown bugs.  As we can only fix problems when 
  38. they can be reproduced, we appreciate those players that sent us their 
  39. problem save games so that we were actually able to see the problems 
  40. happen and fix them. 
  41.  
  42.          This disk also contains a new version of the MC2INST program:
  43.  
  44.              If the MC2INST.EXE program has problems scanning your 
  45. hardware, an option has been added to allow you to skip this function. 
  46. Due to the fact that no hardware was scanned all the questions will 
  47. default and when you select options it will tell you that you do not 
  48. have that particular hardware. However, you can override the default 
  49. options and enter the correct settings for your machine. 
  50.  
  51. NOTE: IF YOU HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLING THE GAME ONTO YOUR 
  52. PARTICULAR HARD DRIVE SETUP, THEN READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE MANUAL 
  53. INSTALL PROCESS.

  55.                RECLAIM.EXE   Program to Recover lost characters
  56.  
  57.          The RECLAIM.EXE program will allow you to restore characters which 
  58. have been lost while they were on assignment.  Before running this program 
  59. make sure that the character which you are seeking is indeed "lost".  In 
  60. "Magic Candle II", the NPC's (non-player characters) may become bored with 
  61. their assignments and leave, returning to their original starting point. This 
  62. is based on their Loyalty and may be one reason why he/she is  not at the 
  63. assigned position.  Also, the character may have been captured on the journey 
  64. from their point of origin to their  destination. This is based on the 
  65. characters Stealth skill. If the NPC has been captured, then he/she would be 
  66. in one of the jails in one of the dungeons along the way.  If these are not 
  67. the cases then this program is for you.  First run UPDATE to place reclaim.exe 
  68. in your"Magic Candle II" directory.  
  69.  
  70.          Type RECLAIM and press Enter to run the program.  The screen will 
  71. display a list of all the saved games in that directory.  Select the 
  72. appropriate saved game using the cursor keys or the numeric keypad with the 
  73. numlock function DISABLED.  Once the saved game is selected a list of 
  74. characters currently on assignment in that saved game will appear.  
  75. *IMPORTANT*  The party may not have met some of the characters on the list.  
  76. DO NOT reclaim these characters as it may cause further problems. If you wish 
  77. to restore a character, move the cursor to that character and press  Enter.  
  78. Reclaiming a character will return him/her to their original starting place.  
  79. *ALSO IMPORTANT* If characters on  legitimate assignments are restored, they 
  80. will cease their current  activities (i.e. stop making money, learning spells, 
  81. etc.).  When the appropriate characters have been restored, exit the menu by 
  82. pressing ESC. Save the changes (at this point you may choose not to save the 
  83. changes if you have made a mistake), and exit  the program (or rechoose your 
  84. saved game and repeat the process  above until you are satisfied with the 
  85. changes).  The lost characters should now appear in their original starting  
  86. locations.

  89.          DEBUG Process to Fix characters not appearing at Strongholds 
  90.  
  91.  
  92.         We have received a few calls about problems with characters 
  93. missing that are supposedly at a stronghold. Correct mindstone coordinates 
  94. appear but the character is not at the stronghold. 
  95.  
  96.         The chart below gives the "debug" value for the various 
  97. NPCs that join the party.  This will only fix the situation in which 
  98. a character says (via the mindstone) that they have arrived at astronghold 
  99. and the correct stronghold coordinates are given but when  the party 
  100. is inside the stronghold, that character does not appear. 
  101.  
  102.  PLEASE MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF THE FFSAV*.MCS FILES IN THE "MAGIC 
  103. CANDLE II" HARD DRIVE DIRECTORY BEFORE ALTERING GAMES USING THESE 
  104. DEBUG COMMANDS! 
  105.  
  106.        1)  To alter the save game, go to the Magic Candle II directory 
  107. on the hard drive. For example:

  120. is the character's number from table below.

  146.                          HOW TO DO THE MANUAL INSTALL
  147.  
  148.          In some rare circumstances, customers have not been able 
  149. to install The Magic Candle II onto their hard drive. If this is happening 
  150. to you, then these instructions are for you. Only use these instructions 
  151. if you have been unable to install the "Magic Candle II" game 
  152. onto your hard drive.
  153.  
  154.   1)     To do Manual install, you must first select the letter of 
  155. the hard drive (C: for example) and press Enter. 
  156.  
  157.   2)     Type CD \ and press Enter to get to the main 
  158. directory on hard drive. 
  159.  
  160.   3)     Type  MKDIR  \MC2 and press Enter (or another 
  161. directory if not \MC2)
  162.  
  163.   4)     Place the original "Magic Candle II" disk #1 into 
  164. a floppy drive. Type the letter of the selected floppy drive and press 
  165. Enter  (For Example, A:) 
  166.  
  167.   5)     Type the Decomp command followed by the file name on 
  168. the floppy diskette with the .MC2 extension (including drive letter), 
  169. and then the full path where game is to be installed including hard 
  170. drive letter, followed by an additional "\".  The file name 
  171. on the diskette is MC2LD1.MC2 for the 1st 3 1/2" diskette (low density) 
  172. or MC2HD1.MC2 for the 1st High Density 5 1/4" diskette. {HD for High 
  173. Density, LD for Low Density}.  
  174.  
  175.    EXAMPLES:

  177. DECOMP A:MC2HD1.MC2 C:\MC2\    
  178.  
  179. This would install from Drive A: High Density 5 1/4" Diskette to Drive 
  180. C: in the \MC2 directory. 
  181.  
  182. DECOMP  B:MC2LD1.MC2  C:\FORTY4\  
  183.  
  184. This would install from Drive B: Low Density 3 1/2" Diskette to Drive 
  185. D: in a \FORTY4 directory.                     
  186.  
  187.   6)     Repeat the DECOMP command for disk #2 of High Density 5 1/4" 
  188. and Disks #2 and #3 of Low Density 3 1/2" versions but change the 
  189. file name of the .MC2 file.  The file on Disk # 2 of High Density 
  190. 5 1/4" is called MC2HD2.MC2 or MC2LD2.MC2 for Disk #2 Low Density.

  192. EXAMPLE:

  196.  Would continue the install from A:  High Density 5 1/4" Disk #2  to 
  197. C:\MC2 directory.

  199.   7)     Once all disks have had the .MC2 compressed files decompressed, 
  200. the game will be installed. Place the upgrade diskette in flopy drive 
  201. and follow the upgrade procedure to update files on the hard drive.
  202.  
  203.           You must run the MC2INST.EXE program to set your machine's 
  204. configuration before playing. Select Configure once the MC2INST program 
  205. is run and answer NO if asked about new copying of files. 
  206.
